Can Glucose Control Be Normalized by
GLP-1 in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes?

The Effect of GLP-1 Infusion on Glycemic Control in
Type 2 Diabetes

In a clinical study, infusion of GLP-1 lowered plasma glucose to normal levels in all patients, and significant decreases were observed at all time points from 60 minutes onward (P<0.05 vs placebo).14 At high plasma glucose levels, GLP-1 infusion induced an increase in plasma insulin and a decrease in glucagon.14 When plasma glucose decreased, approaching normal values, insulin and glucagon returned towards or near baseline levels, despite the continuous presence of GLP-1,14 thus illustrating the glucose-dependent action of GLP-1.

N=10 patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients were studied on two occasions. A regular meal and drug schedule was allowed for one day between the experiments with GLP-1 and placebo.14
